Capturing Horses on Camera!

Hey, horse fans!

As you can probably tell, I love, love, LOVE horses!! (In fact, I just gave mine a bath today. She loved it!)

Seeing as I also love photography, I thought I would share with you some tips on capturing horses on the camera!

1. I know this might sound silly, but make sure your battery is fully charged and that you have plenty of space on your media card before you begin. You'd be surprised how many great shots have been missed because there wasn't enough room on the card or because the battery wasn't charged! Know your settings, and change them before you start to shoot for what seems to be appropriate.

2. Pick your background carefully! Lots of clutter, or junk, in the background will distract the viewer from the main focus or story you are trying to tell. When shooting horses, several non-distracting backgrounds I like are fields, darkness or light that will contrast with the subject, dust, fog, or, my favorite, cloudy, or stormy, horizons. :)

3. Lighting. Sometimes when I hear this word I just want to go, "Uggh, come on! I just want to snap the picture!" But the angle of the light controls the artistic effects on your photo. And, good news! There are lots of ways to be artistic with lighting. You can have the sun coming from behind your subject, called backlighting, that creates a kind of moody feeling. Or you can have direct light, sunlight shining directly above your subject, which creates great illumination, perfect for capturing those high-speed photos. There is also side light. Side light adds small shadows, creating a sort of three-dimensional look for your photo.

4. Make sure your subject reflects the photo you are trying to create or take. For example, if you are wanting to show the beauty or majesty of a horse, it would be best if the horse was well groomed and clean. If however your goal is to show something more like speed or wildness, it isn't as big of a factor to have your horse groomed.

5. Go out and just have fun! One more tip for you. Snap away; I've found that when I'm taking pictures, if I take a bunch, there's bound to be at least one good picture.

Hope that didn't absolutely bore you to death!

P.S. I have more posted on the Princess Rosalie story! And I was also able to find some pictures that looked a teeny bit-- I said teeny-- like what I imagine her to look like. Although I imagine Rosalie to be way prettier than the random kid in the photo that I used. Anyways, hope you enjoy!
